VECHAI
Single-use plastic bags are common in Vietnam, but their disposal poses serious environmental and health risks. As part of my Master’s thesis, I examined plastic pollution in Vietnam and explored people’s perceptions and habits around these bags and developed creative strategies to help households reduce and better manage plastic waste. The research project led to the development of VECHAI, a speculative social enterprise and door-to-door waste collection system aimed at reducing plastic waste in Vietnam. Inspired by the traditional “ve chai” practice, collecting recyclable items like glass, paper, and bottles, VECHAI acts as a broker, collecting recyclables from households and selling them to recycling centres. The concept includes digital prototypes of a mobile app and website to encourage sustainable living and minimise environmental contamination.
